How do I use my OPUS card?
Your new OPUS card doesn’t come with any tickets or passes. It’s up to you to load the fares you need.
When loading your card, always check available fare types and make sure you choose the right one to add to your OPUS card. For example, Bus fares aren’t valid on the train or metro. Similarly, All Modes A fares aren’t valid on buses or the metro in Laval. Learn more about zones and fares.
Once you’ve loaded a fare on your OPUS card, simply tap your card on the card reader as you enter a metro station or board a bus. When taking the train, always keep your OPUS card handy in case a fare inspector asks for proof of payment.
How can I check my balance?
What should I do if I lose my card?
If you lose a registered OPUS card, simply go to a metropolitan ticket office to get a new one and have any remaining fares transferred to the new card. Your old card will be cancelled, and no one will be able to use it. Charges apply.
If you lose an unregistered OPUS card, you won’t be covered by the OPUS replacement guarantee in case of loss, damage or theft. That means you’ll have to buy a new OPUS card and pay for new fares.
What should I do if my card stops working?
Go to a metropolitan ticket office to have it checked and replaced as needed.
Defective cards are replaced free of charge. However, if your card looks like it was damaged and stopped working due to misuse, you will be charged for the new one.
If the card is an unregistered regular OPUS card without photo ID and it can’t be read, you’ll need to show proof of purchase to recover any remaining fares.

Regular OPUS cards (without photo ID) must be renewed every four years. There are several ways to check your card’s expiry date using the number on the back of the card:
Remember to buy a new OPUS card before your old card expires so you can load new fares. The card will cost you $6. Once your regular OPUS card (without photo ID) expires, it will no longer be valid or functional. You have six months from the expiry date to recover any remaining fares and transfer them to your new card. To do so, go to a metropolitan ticket office or mail the card to our Customer Contact Centre.
What if I still have fares on my card when it expires?
If you have remaining fares on your expired card, you can recover them under certain conditions. Simply bring your expired OPUS card to a metropolitan ticket office.
If the expired card is damaged or unreadable, remaining fares can be recovered only if the card was registered.
Can I get a refund on fares I purchased by mistake?
Refunds are available in certain cases and under certain conditions only. Go to a metropolitan ticket office and show your OPUS card and the original receipt for the fares you want refunded. The rules governing refunds and exchanges are set by the Autorité régionale de transport métropolitain (ARTM):
